Ermoupolis Harbour, Siros, Greece

DESCRIPTION
The harbour is very large and is used by ferries, fishing boats and private yachts. It has an outer breakwater but the swell from the meltemi does enter and can play havoc with yachts moored here (see video below). We anchored and moored stern-to at the North end of the harbour which is surrounded by shops and restaurants. It is very convenient for the main center of town.Notice the unfinished marina at the south end of the harbour. We did not explore this but it may be available for use - although it is a distance from the main center of town.

MOORING
You will anchor out and moor stern or bows-to. Get as far away from the dock as you can because of the swell and note that many of the bollards are rusted and will chafe your lines.FACILITIES ASHORE
WIFI: We were able to pick up an unsecured wifi signal in the harbour. There are also a number of internet cafes and regular restaurants offering free internet for customers.UTILITIES: The harbour offers 220v electricity and water. Both are metered and can be accessed by purchasing a card at the newspaper shop on the harbourwall. There is no charge to tie up in the harbour.
OTHERS: Ermoupolis is a large town and was once the center of the Cyclades. It has a vast range of shops and services. Unfortunately we had to leave due to a meltemi and did not get to experience them.
ALTERNATIVES
If the swell from the meltemi causes you to leave Ermoupolis, there is a good anchorage just around the southern tip of the island. The wind streaks through this anchorage in a meltemi but there are no waves or swell. Holding is good. There is a small fishing harbour half way up the bay with a few tavernas which is a convenient place to dinghy ashore. Not to be used for navigation
